SGIA asked each company outline their individual 2017 sustainability project. MODERNISTIC’s chose to INCREASE USE OF FALCONBOARD MATERIAL (corrugated green) BY 25%. The project was very successful; 2017 saw an increase of over 340% using this material. This was achieved by recommending this green alternative over other traditional plastics to our customer base. This paper/corrugated material is much more recyclable-friendly throughout many retail locations. Additionally, the lighter weight of this material contributes to reduced shipping costs and fuel consumption, another important “green” consideration for our customer base.

Each company was asked to outline the 2016 sustainability project they had undertaken. MODERNISTIC chose to reduce our overall cleaning disinfectant chemical usage by 75%. Over the course of 2016, we had reduced the cleaning disinfectant chemical usage by 85%. We were able to achieve this by installing a chemical dispensing system which dramatically reduced our chemical waste.

This process change reduces the environmental footprint by lowering our chemical usage and helping decrease waste of chemicals – Disinfectant chemicals mixed accurately versus pouring an estimated amount into containers. In addition to the decreased usage come significant environmental benefits, as MODERNISTIC drastically reduces the amount of plastic of “ready to use’ bottles of disinfectant that are shipped into our facility because now we have a concentrated solution.

Measures were implemented to further reduce that number going forward, such as: creating and implementing strict procedures when handling lacquer, training associates on proper amounts for lacquer used for cleaning screens in the press room, and implementing new chemicals with even lower VOC content.

This reduces Modernistic’s environmental footprint because using less lacquer reduces our employee exposure to VOC’s and reduces the amount of VOC’s that are emitted from their facility.

Each company was asked to outline the 2013 sustainability project they had undertaken. Modernistic Inc. has reduced their volume of wax in their screen making area by 46%. Measures were implemented to drop that number to 0% going forward by using their new Signtronic Stencil Master Screen making machine.

This process change reduces the environmental footprint by lowering risks to the environment. When making screens for printing, wax is reduced,  and therefore Modernistic’s environmental footprint is reduced. Utilizing our new Signtronic Stencil Master Screen making machine there is no longer a need for plotting an opaque wax mask in the process. Shipping heavy wax is eliminated and this non-toxic water soluble wax is no longer washed into the wastewater stream.
